About This Opportunity

The Shanmukhananda Annual Music Competition is one of the longest-running classical music contests in India, organised every year by Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha in Mumbai.

The competition is open to boys and girls in seven disciplines: Carnatic Vocal, Carnatic Violin, Carnatic Veena, Carnatic Mrudangam, Hindustani Vocal, Hindustani Sitar and Hindustani Tabla. Competitors are grouped by age into Group I (10 to 15 years), Group II (16 to 28 years) and Group III (29 years and above), with proof of age required at entry.

Within each discipline, several sub-competitions cover specific repertoires such as Varnams, Keertanams and Kritis, compositions of the Trinity, Purandaradasa, Swati Tirunal, Tamizh composers, GNB kritis, Padams and Javalis, Thiruppugazh and Ragam Tanam Pallavi for Carnatic streams, and graded Raag presentations for Hindustani streams. Endowment and memorial prizes instituted by leading patrons and musicians are awarded across categories, and special trophies recognise the Best Junior Vocalist and Best Senior Vocalist.

Entry forms are issued from the Sabha's Sangeetha Vidyalaya office in Sion East, with a non-refundable entrance fee of Rs. 200 per competition. First prize winners in a particular group are not eligible to re-enter the same group, and All India Radio or Doordarshan-listed artistes cannot participate.

Prerequisites

  • Working knowledge of the chosen discipline (Carnatic Vocal, Violin, Veena, Mrudangam, Hindustani Vocal, Sitar or Tabla)
  • Ability to present the prescribed repertoire for the chosen sub-competition and group
  • Competitors must arrange their own Shruti, instruments and Talam accompaniment

Open to boys and girls aged 10 years and above. Children compete in Group I (10 to 15 years) and Group II (16 to 28 years). Proof of age must be submitted with the entry form. First prize winners in a previous group are not eligible to re-enter the same group, and All India Radio or Doordarshan listed artistes cannot participate.

Rounds & format

Each discipline runs as a single live performance round before the judges. Competitors present the prescribed repertoire for their chosen sub-competition within the time decided by the judges, not exceeding 15 to 20 minutes.

How entries are judged

Judging is done by a panel nominated by the Sabha and the decision of the judges is final. Judges may ask a competitor to render Niraval and Kalpana Swaram and may stop the presentation at any stage at their discretion.

Selection process

Direct selection on the basis of the live performance before the judges. Where fewer than three entries are received in a competition, the prize is awarded only if the contestant scores at least 70 percent.
