About This Opportunity
The National Green Corps (NGC) Programme is a flagship environmental education initiative of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India, launched in 2001-02 to build a nationwide cadre of environmentally conscious children.
The programme operates through school-based eco-clubs, with each eco-club typically comprising 30 to 50 student members who join voluntarily under the guidance of a teacher in charge. The network has grown into one of the largest conservation movements in the world, covering well over one lakh schools across the country.
Eco-clubs engage students in hands-on activities organised around five core themes: biodiversity conservation, water conservation, energy conservation, waste management, and land-use planning and resource management. Typical activities include tree plantation drives, rainwater harvesting, composting of biodegradable waste, setting up of vegetable gardens, butterfly gardens and biodiversity gardens, solar and biogas demonstrations, cleanliness drives in and around the school campus, nature walks, environmental quizzes, poster and essay competitions, and observance of major environmental days such as World Environment Day and Earth Day.
The Centre for Environment Education (CEE), Ahmedabad, serves as the national resource agency providing technical and advisory support. State Pollution Control Boards, State Councils of Science, Technology and Environment, and similar bodies act as State Nodal Agencies for implementation. Each eligible eco-club receives an annual grant from the central programme to support its activities, and outstanding clubs are recognised at district, state and national levels. The programme has since been streamlined under the broader Environment Education Programme (EEP) of MoEFCC, with the eco-club model continuing as its core delivery mechanism.
