India Meteorological Department (IMD)

New Delhi, Delhi

About

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is the premier agency of the Government of India for meteorological observations, weather forecasting, and seismology. Established in 1875, IMD provides crucial weather and climate services across various sectors including agriculture, aviation, shipping, and disaster management. It plays a vital role in issuing timely warnings for severe weather phenomena such as tropical cyclones, heavy rains, and heatwaves, significantly contributing to public safety and economic development. IMD conducts extensive research in meteorology and allied disciplines, continuously advancing its forecasting capabilities through state-of-the-art technology and indigenous development. The department operates a vast network of observatories across India and Antarctica and is recognized as one of the six Regional Specialised Meteorological Centres by the World Meteorological Organization, with responsibility for tropical cyclone warnings in the Northern Indian Ocean. IMD is committed to making India a 'Weather-ready and Climate-smart' nation, leveraging advanced infrastructure like a growing network of Doppler Weather Radars and dedicated weather satellites. The department also offers specialized training programs in operational meteorology, and extends learning opportunities to young students through initiatives like the National Meteorological Olympiad, aimed at fostering early interest in weather science and climate awareness.
