About This Opportunity
The Bangalore Gayana Samaja Annual Music Competitions is a prestigious series of Carnatic classical music contests conducted by the Samaja since 1951. The Sub-Junior Konnakkol and Percussion category covers two distinct Carnatic rhythmic art forms: Konnakkol, the South Indian art of vocal percussion where performers chant rhythmic syllables (solkattu) vocally without instruments; and Mridangam, the foundational percussion drum of Carnatic music. Competitions are held at Acharya Pathasala High School, Basavanagudi, Bengaluru.
This category is open to Sub-Junior students aged 8 to 11 years learning either Konnakkol or Mridangam. Konnakkol performers chant rhythmic patterns demonstrating tala proficiency and rhythmic precision entirely through voice. Mridangam performers demonstrate tala keeping, tonal quality across the drum's strokes, and korvai (rhythmic cadence patterns). Both are evaluated by panels of senior Carnatic percussionists.
Winners receive First, Second, Third, and Consolation prizes from one of India's oldest operational Carnatic music sabhas. Outstanding young performers across all categories may be felicitated with the Yuva Kala Rathna title at the November Annual Music Conference, which carries a cash prize of Rs. 20,000.
