About this opportunity
The Basic Indian Sign Language (ISL) Course is a five-session training series developed by NCERT in collaboration with the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Centre (ISLRTC). It is telecast on the PM e-Vidya DTH ISL Channel 31.
Indian Sign Language is a full natural language with its own vocabulary and grammar. The course introduces learners to everyday conversation in ISL, covering greetings and self-introduction, people and relations, food items, daily routines, and the colour, shape and size of objects.
Sessions also cover Deaf culture and the rights of Deaf people as members of society, alongside the place of ISL in mainstream education, workplaces and public services. NCERT states that the course is meant to build wider awareness of ISL so that communication between the Deaf community and the non-Deaf community becomes easier in everyday settings.
Participation is open to anyone interested and no prior experience is needed. Sessions are taught by ISL instructors and Deaf master trainers from ISLRTC together with NCERT faculty. Registered participants who score 70 percent or higher in the end-of-course quiz receive a certificate from CIET, NCERT.
