About this opportunity
Astronomy Ambassadors trained by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics host guided night sky viewing sessions through 8-inch telescopes in the villages of the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve in Ladakh.
This is a visitor experience rather than a structured course for students. There is no syllabus, no selection and no assessment. Families travel to Hanle on their own, stay in a village homestay, and arrange an evening session directly with an Ambassador or through the homestay.
The reserve covers about 1,073 square kilometres around Hanle inside the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary and was notified in December 2022 as the first dark sky reserve in the country. Twenty-four residents of the Hanle valley, two-thirds of them women, were selected and trained by the institute to operate the telescopes and guide visitors, and they now earn a livelihood from these sessions.
Hanle sits at about 4,200 metres above sea level, roughly 270 kilometres and a six-hour drive east of Leh. The institute advises 48 hours of rest in Leh before travelling further, asks visitors to write ahead so logistics can be arranged, and notes that the research telescopes at the observatory cannot be used by visitors for observing. Sessions depend on clear, moonless nights.

Open to visitors of any age; the institute publishes no age or grade restriction for these sessions. Sessions are booked per person with an Astronomy Ambassador or through a Hanle homestay. Indian nationals carry the LAHDC Leh environment and wildlife fee receipt; foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit and may not stay overnight in Hanle. Tolerance of altitude above 4,000 metres is the practical limit.

Charged per person for the guided telescope session and uniform across all Astronomy Ambassadors, paid directly to the guide. The homestay stay, food, travel from Leh and the Ladakh environment and wildlife fee are all separate costs. The institute states that it has no financial relationship with the homestays and does not certify them.
