Fees and financial support
Fee details
Charged per student and per category, so a student entered in two subjects pays twice. The rate depends on when the school registers: USD 35 on the priority deadline, USD 45 on the regular deadline, and USD 55 on the late deadline. Fee waivers are available for students with financial need, requested by the school principal from an official school email address.
Financial support
Fee waivers are available for students with financial need. Outside the United States the school principal submits the request to the organiser from an official school email address, naming the students, the competition and the category. A school is granted at most one team fee waiver per competition, and a student may receive at most two fee waivers over their school career.
About this opportunity
The Harvard Crimson Global Quiz Bowl Social Studies Upper Primary category is for students in Grade 3 to Grade 5, which the organiser also writes as Year 4 to Year 6. It is administered by AlgoEd under The Harvard Crimson brand and it runs entirely online, so a school in any country enters on the same terms.
A team is 2 to 5 students from the same school. Every member sits the preliminary test individually and the team score is the sum of the two highest individual scores, so a young team is not punished for the range inside it. The Upper Primary test runs one hour.
Questions in this category cover basic history, geography and cultures and how communities function, including interpreting simple maps and information and recognising key ideas about places and societies. The preliminary paper mixes multiple choice, fill in the blank and short questions; the later rounds are read aloud as rapid-fire questions over Zoom.
The top 25 percent of the preliminary round are named Honor and the top 50 percent Merit. The 15 highest scoring teams in the category go to the semi-final, the top 5 from there reach the final, and the final decides the global champion, second and third place, with the teams placed fourth to eighth recognised as Global Finalists.
Upper Primary and the other primary category are entered separately and shortlisted separately, and the registration fee is charged per student per category.
Exam format
- Duration
- 60 minutes
- Format
- Multiple choice, fill in the blank and short questions in the preliminary round, then live rapid-fire questions in the semi-final and final
Rounds and format
Round 1 is the preliminary, an online test of one hour taken individually by every team member, with only the two highest scores counting towards the team total. Round 2 is the semi-final, live rapid-fire questions over Zoom for the 15 highest scoring teams in the category. Round 3 is the final, live rapid-fire questions over Zoom for the top 5 teams, which decides the global champion.
How entries are judged
Scoring is on the accuracy of answers in the preliminary test and on accuracy and speed in the live rapid-fire semi-final and final rounds. A team total is the sum of the two highest individual scores rather than an average across the team.
Selection process
Team totals from the preliminary round rank the category. The top 25 percent of students are named Honor and the top 50 percent Merit. The 15 highest scoring teams reach the semi-final and the top 5 from there reach the final, which decides champion, second and third place, with fourth to eighth recognised as Global Finalists.

Students in Grade 3 to Grade 5, which the organiser also writes as Year 4 to Year 6. The other primary category covers the remaining grades and is entered separately.

One hour for Upper Primary. Each team member sits it individually online on Sunday 27 September 2026.
How is a team score worked out?
Only the two highest individual scores from the preliminary round are added to make the team total, so a team is not held back by its youngest or least experienced member.
