About this opportunity
Khagol Mandal runs public overnight sky observation sessions at dark-sky sites outside Mumbai, where participants spend a full night watching planets, star clusters and nebulae through the group's telescopes.
Each session opens with an evening registration and an introduction to the telescopes, followed by a long first observation spell, a dinner break, an audio-visual talk with a question and answer round, and a second observation spell that runs until the early hours.
The volunteers who run the sessions are amateur astronomers, several with more than twenty-five years of observing experience, and they guide participants through constellation identification and deep sky objects. Sessions run from the Mumbai side are conducted in English with inputs in Marathi and Hindi, while the Nashik sessions are held mainly in Marathi.
Sessions fall on the Saturday closest to the new moon, about eight to ten times a year, and pause through the monsoon months. Seats are limited and booked in advance, with no entry at the gate. Participants sit on open ground through the night and are asked to bring a mattress, warm clothing and personal medicines.

Charges have ranged from about 550 to 850 rupees per person depending on the venue and what is included. Sessions at the group's own observation field have carried lower rates, with reduced charges for students aged 8 to 16, for senior citizens and for Khagol Mandal members, and free entry for young children.
Refund policy
Cancellations made before the stated cut-off on the day before a session have carried a partial refund, and no refund is given after that cut-off. Bus coupons carry an earlier cut-off. No refund is given when a session is curtailed or cancelled because of rain, cloud or other circumstances outside the organisers' control.
