About this opportunity
Marine Life of Mumbai runs free guided walks on the city's intertidal shores at low tide, where participants explore rock pools with marine biologists and record what they find.
Walks are held about once a month and are timed to the spring low tides, so they start early in the morning and last roughly as long as the tide stays out. Participants move across a rocky or sandy shore looking for sea anemones, sponges, hermit crabs, sea slugs, octopus, corals, sea urchins and sea stars, and the walk leaders explain how spring and neap tides work before setting out. Every sighting is photographed and uploaded to iNaturalist, where it joins a freely accessible long-term record of the city's marine life.
Some editions are run separately for first timers and for people returning for a second or third walk. The programme is volunteer-driven and has been documenting Mumbai's shores since 2017, and regular participants can join the volunteer team. Handling animals is not permitted, because several species found on these shores are harmful.

The organisation states the project is and always will be free for anyone to join, and asks for donations to sustain it rather than charging participants. Paid marine walks advertised by commercial tour operators in Mumbai are run by other organisations and are not these walks.
