About this opportunity

The Nehru Junior Hockey Tournament is an invitational Under-17 boys hockey competition organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society in New Delhi. The tournament is part of the wider Nehru Hockey legacy that began in 1951 in memory of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.

Teams are drawn from Indian state hockey associations, Sports Authority of India centres, public sector units and recognised hockey academies across the country. Matches are typically played on the synthetic turfs at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and the National Stadium in New Delhi.

The tournament follows a knockout or league-cum-knockout format over one to two weeks, giving young players competitive exposure against the best junior sides in India. Officiating is done by panel umpires recognised by Hockey India.

The event is a recognised scouting platform for junior India camps, and many past participants have progressed to state senior squads and the Indian junior national team.

  • Played on the historic turfs of the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium and the National Stadium
  • Brings together state, SAI, PSU and academy teams in one invitational draw

Rounds & format

Teams reach the Nehru Junior Hockey Tournament through a state-level qualifying process: the state Director of Education or Sports sponsors the champion school team of the state, and may additionally sponsor a sports school or academy team on the same terms, for entry into the national draw. Once nominated teams are confirmed, the tournament in New Delhi is played over a league-cum-knockout format across the tournament window, with fixtures and results following FIH and Hockey India regulations. The knockout stage decides the champion, with officiating handled by panel umpires recognised by Hockey India.

How entries are judged

Match results decided as per FIH and Hockey India rules; individual awards based on tournament performance

Teams enter the tournament only through invitational nomination by a recognised sponsoring body: the state Director of Education or Sports, a Sports Authority of India centre, a public sector unit or an approved hockey academy. Each nominated squad carries 16 to 18 players, whose entry form and bio-data must be countersigned by the sponsoring authority. On arrival at the venue, every player is screened by the tournament's Medical Committee against the submitted age proof, and any player found to be overage is disqualified from the tournament.
