About This Opportunity
The Unified Champion Schools Program is a nationwide whole-school inclusion initiative run by Special Olympics Bharat in partnership with Special Olympics International. Schools enrol students with intellectual disabilities and their non-disabled peers as Unified pairs to play Unified Sports, lead inclusion projects, and shape a school climate of acceptance and respect.
The programme is designed for schools across all grades from pre-primary through senior secondary. Two participant streams operate side by side: students with intellectual disabilities identified by an agency or professional, and non-disabled peer students from the same school who serve as Unified partners. Participation is at the school level rather than individual enrolment.
The programme is built around three components. Unified Sports brings co-ed teams of students with and without intellectual disabilities together for joint training and competition. Inclusive Youth Leadership pairs student leaders for awareness drives, advocacy and capacity-building projects through Local and National Youth Leadership Summits. Whole School Engagement reaches every student through assemblies, fan zones, anti-discrimination pledges and inclusion campaigns.
Schools that meet five standards across the four programme categories earn recognition as a Unified Champion School of Distinction. The programme has reached over ninety thousand partnered schools across twenty-five plus states since 2011 and continues to expand the pathway from school participation to State, National and World Games.
