The competition is organised across three disciplines covering freestyle wrestling, Greco-Roman wrestling, and women's wrestling, with bouts contested across a series of weight categories within each discipline.
State wrestling associations field their teams of selected wrestlers to compete for individual weight category honours and overall team rankings. Recent editions have featured weight categories such as 40 kilograms, 43 kilograms, 46 kilograms, and 49 kilograms in women's wrestling; 45 kilograms, 55 kilograms, 71 kilograms, and 110 kilograms in freestyle; and 45 kilograms, 48 kilograms, 51 kilograms, 55 kilograms, and 60 kilograms in Greco-Roman, among others.
The championship draws wrestlers from across the country, with recent editions seeing more than six hundred competitors in attendance. Strong performing states and units in past editions have included Haryana and Services Sports Control Board, who have lifted titles across the disciplines. The event sits as the leading national outlet for under-seventeen wrestling talent in India.
