About
Athletics Federation of India is the national governing body for the sport of athletics in India. Founded in 1946 as the Amateur Athletic Federation of India at the initiative of Prof. G.D. Sondhi and Maharaja Yadvindra Singh, it is responsible for organising national championships across age groups, training national campers, and selecting Indian teams for the Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Athletics Championships, Asian Athletics Championships and other international meets. The federation is affiliated to World Athletics and the Asian Athletics Association, and works with affiliated state athletics associations across India to develop the sport from grassroots to elite levels. It conducts a structured annual competition calendar covering Sub-Youth, Youth (U-18), Junior (U-20), Senior, Inter-State, Federation Cup, Indoor and Open events. AFI's youth pathway includes the National Youth (U-18) Athletics Championships, National Junior (U-20) Athletics Championships and Inter-District meets, which serve as selection platforms for Asian and World age-group competitions. The federation also operates national coaching camps and athlete welfare programmes for high-performance athletes.
