About

The B.M. Birla Science Centre is a science dissemination and research institution run by the G P Birla Archaeological Astronomical and Scientific Research Institute (GPBAASRI), a private institute established in 1969. The centre opened in 1985 and serves school students, teachers, families and amateur science enthusiasts. Its stated purpose is to disseminate science and to preserve the country's historical and cultural past. The centre describes itself as an everyman's university and uses museum education to build critical thinking and communication. It runs a research cell on the history of astronomy, projects on ancient Indian science and technology, and an artificial intelligence project for translation between Indian languages. In January 2026 it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services to set up a Blue Planet Exploration Hub for ocean literacy. The campus houses the B.M. Birla Planetarium, the B.M. Birla Science Museum with its Interactive Science Centre, Nobel Gallery, Space Museum and Dinosaurium, the G P Birla Observatory, an archaeological museum and the Nirmala Birla Gallery of Modern Art. Exhibits designed at the centre are used by more than thirty science centres across India. The centre awards the G P Birla Distinguished Award and the B M Birla Science Prizes, and runs the Distinguished Lecture Series, certificate courses and hands-on workshops for school students. It receives more than 500,000 visitors each year.
