About

The Bai Sakarbai Dinshaw Petit Hospital for Animals (BSDPHA) is a charitable animal hospital operated by the Bombay Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (BSPCA), a body its own site records as being in existence since 1874. The hospital treats sick, injured and abandoned animals and receives no financial support from the government, depending entirely on donations. In 2020 the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying transferred the statutory SPCA role from non-government animal welfare organisations to a state-owned SPCA. Following that decision the Bombay SPCA ceased to perform the SPCA role, and as of April 2021 the organisation operates under the hospital name. Its stated mission is to treat sick and injured animals and to educate the community on responsible animal care. The hospital maintains separate wards for dogs, cats, horses, cattle and birds, an isolation ward for rabies, distemper and parvovirus cases, a digital X-ray unit serving both small and large animals, an animal ambulance service and an animal birth control and sterilisation programme. Its Out Patient Department is run jointly with the Bombay Veterinary College. Over the past year the hospital reported treating more than 11,000 animals, including over 5,000 strays, and rehoming more than 250 animals through adoption.
