About
The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) is a government department under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. Established in 1986, it promotes and accelerates the development of biotechnology in India through research funding, infrastructure development, and policy formulation. DBT supports cutting-edge research across areas including agriculture, healthcare, environmental sciences, industrial biotechnology, and bioenergy. The department oversees institutions like BIRAC (Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council) and BRIC (Biotechnology Research Innovation Council) that drive innovation and entrepreneurship in biotechnology. Through programs such as the BioE3 Challenge, Star College Mentor Scheme, and various scholarships, DBT actively engages students and researchers to contribute to India's growing bioeconomy.
