About

Ethics Olympiad Pty Ltd is an Australian company that runs Ethics Olympiads for school and university students internationally. An Ethics Olympiad is a competitive but collaborative event in which student teams analyse real ethical cases and present reasoned positions to academic judges. The organisation was founded in 2013 by Matthew Wills, then head of philosophy, values and religious education at Hale School, after early trials connected Australian and United States schools by video conference. It builds on the Ethics Bowl model developed in the United States and on the Philosothon format. The company moved its events fully online in 2020 and has since grown to run around fifty Olympiads a year. Events run in four age divisions covering junior school, middle school, senior school and tertiary students, with a separate case set written for each division. Judging is carried out by philosophy academics and postgraduate researchers from universities in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States. The company also runs optional training clinics, a case writing competition, a school membership scheme and hosting licences, and holds international finals for the strongest middle school and senior school teams.
