About
The Geological Survey of India is the national geoscience agency of the Government of India and an attached office of the Ministry of Mines. Established in 1851, it creates and maintains the country's geoscientific information and mineral resource assessments. Its work is organised around five missions covering ground, aerial and marine surveys, natural resource assessment, information dissemination, fundamental and multidisciplinary geoscience research, and training and capacity building. The organisation runs the Geological Survey of India Training Institute and the National Landslide Forecasting Centre, and maintains the National Geoscience Data Repository. The agency also works on public geoscience outreach. It maintains geology galleries at the Indian Museum, contributed the Dinosaurium exhibit at the Birla Science Museum, documents national geoheritage sites through the Bhuvirasat platform, and set up the country's first national geoscience museum. It completed 175 years of service in 2026.
