About
National Moth Week is an annual global citizen-science event that invites people to observe, photograph and document moths. It is a project of Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, a non-profit organisation dedicated to environmental education and conservation. The event began in 2012 as a single local mothing evening and now sees registered events in all fifty United States and in more than ninety countries across every continent except Antarctica. It is entirely volunteer-driven, with a network of country coordinators who organise participation in their own regions and a science advisory board supporting the work. Participants submit their moth photographs through partner platforms including iNaturalist and Project Noah, and in India through the India Biodiversity Portal and Biodiversity Atlas India as well. The records build long-term distribution data that researchers use to study how climate change, urbanisation and pollution affect native moth populations. Registering an event is free, and taking part costs nothing.
