About
Ninasam, formally the Nilakanteshwara Natyaseva Sangha, is a renowned cultural institution founded in 1949 in the village of Heggodu, Karnataka. What began as a small theatre company has grown into a unique experiment fusing art practice with social commitment. The institution works across several wings: an amateur theatre troupe, the Akshara Prakashana publishing house, a film appreciation society, a residential theatre institute, and the Tirugata rural touring repertory. Together these have published hundreds of titles and staged plays across rural Karnataka. Ninasam was founded by the writer and cultural activist K. V. Subbanna and continues under the direction of K. V. Akshara. Subbanna's contribution to culture was recognised with the Ramon Magsaysay Award and the Padma Shri. The Ninasam Theatre Institute, established in 1980, runs an intensive residential diploma in theatre arts that has trained hundreds of practitioners now active in non-commercial theatre across India.
