About this opportunity
The CBSE badminton tournament for Under-19 is entered, played and medalled as its own age group. A player must be within the Under-19 age group as on 31 December of the year of the competition. Boys and girls compete in separate sections.
A school enters one team of two to five players in this age group, separately for boys and girls. Cluster meets play a team championship only, in the order singles, doubles, singles, and the national tournament adds separate singles and doubles championships.
Only bona fide students of CBSE affiliated private schools take part, and a student who has failed twice in a class is not eligible. The school enters the player online through the CBSE sports portal in three steps: it registers the student to get a UID, completes Apply to Participate for the sport, and emails the host school to confirm at least a week before the meet.
The badminton tournament runs in two stages, a cluster meet and then the national tournament. Badminton is not held at zonal level. Cluster winners go on to the national tournament, and a team cannot change its players between the two.
Gold, silver and bronze medals go to the winners, with merit certificates for them and participation certificates for everyone who plays, all issued online. Travel, food and kit are paid for by the school or the family, and teams report to the host school the day before the event starts.

Rounds & format
Cluster meets are knock-out, or league cum knock-out where a category has few teams. The national tournament puts teams into pools of at least four, and the top two from each pool play the knock-out rounds. The national singles and doubles championships are knock-out.
How entries are judged
A team tie is played singles, doubles, singles. Knock-out matches are the best of three games to 15 points with no deuce; where a cluster category runs league cum knock-out, its semi-finals and finals are the best of three games to 21. Play follows Badminton Association of India rules.
Selection process
The winning team at each cluster meet qualifies for the national tournament, with no change of players allowed between the two stages.

Fees & financial support
Fee details
CBSE charges no entry fee per student. Each private affiliated school pays an annual sports fee of Rs 10,000, added to its Class IX to XII registration, so the cost sits with the school. A school that registers or applies after the last date pays a late fee of Rs 500 per student for up to seven days and Rs 1,000 per student for eight to fourteen days. Travel, food and kit are paid for by the school or the family.
