About This Opportunity
The Foundation Course at Kathak Kendra is a five-year structured programme in Kathak classical dance offered by the National Institute of Kathak Dance, a constituent unit of the Sangeet Natak Akademi under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India. The curriculum covers practical training in core Kathak elements — Thaat, Aamad, Tode, Paran — alongside rhythm theory, Kathak history, and Abhinaya (expressive aspects).
Students must be between 10 and 13 years of age as of July 1 of the admission year and must hold a Class III pass certificate. No prior dance training is required, making this an ideal entry point for serious beginners. A medical fitness certificate from an MBBS doctor is required at the time of admission.
Supplementary training in Hindustani vocal music and Tabla or Pakhawaj is integrated into the curriculum. Students who successfully complete the Foundation Course are eligible to advance to the Diploma Pass Course (3 years) and subsequently to higher diploma levels. A monthly scholarship of Rs. 1,000 is available for eligible students from Year 3 onwards.
