About this opportunity
The Summer Camp at Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens introduces students to the basics of captive wild animal management and wildlife conservation. It runs every year in two ten-day batches during April and May.
Participants aged 12 to 18 years learn about biodiversity, animal behaviour, wildlife crimes and laws, and health care management of captive animals. Sessions are led by zoo officials, veterinarians and subject matter experts, and pair theory classes with zoo patrol duty and direct interaction with animal keepers.
The camp extends beyond the zoo premises with visits to Karanji Lake Nature Park and the Regional Museum of Natural History, giving students a broader view of conservation work in the region. Each batch is capped at 60 students, selected on a first come first served basis once applications open.
Students who complete the programme receive a certificate at a closing ceremony and are encouraged to stay connected with the zoo through its youth club. The camp has run every year since 2005, making it one of the longest running wildlife education programmes for school-going children in Karnataka.
