About this opportunity
The National Schools Chess Championship Under-7 is the All India Chess Federation age category for school students who have not reached the age of 7. It is played as its own section, with its own entries, its own nine rounds and its own set of prizes, separately for Open and Girls.
Entries are routed strictly through the AICF affiliated state chess association. Direct entries from a player or a school are not accepted. A state association, school association or school may enter any number of players in the section. Every player must be a bona fide student at a school of any syllabus, must be an Indian national, and must be registered with AICF for the year. A birth certificate from a Panchayat, Municipality or Corporation, registered within one year of birth, is the only accepted age proof, and a school certificate is not accepted.
Play follows the FIDE Laws of Chess under the Swiss system over nine rounds, at 90 minutes per player with a 30 second increment from move one. Where the Girls section of this age group draws fewer than ten players, it is merged into the Open section of the same age group. Twelve players in the section win cash prizes, from Rs 10,000 for first place down to Rs 1,000 for eighth through twelfth.
The Under-7 section carries an extra role. AICF does not run a separate National School Under-5 or Under-6 championship, so players for the Asian School Under-5 and Under-6 championship are identified from the rankings of this section, subject to their age. A player aiming at that Asian event plays here.

Open to Indian nationals who are bona fide school students and who have not reached the age of 7. Boys and girls play in separate Open and Girls sections. Entry is only through the player's AICF-affiliated state chess association, and every player must hold a current AICF registration.

Cash prizes go to twelve players in the Under-7 section, on the same scale in the Open and the Girls sections, Rs 42,000 in each. Prizes are not shared when players tie.

Rounds & format
Nine rounds of Swiss pairing over five days, two rounds on most days and one on the last. The rate of play is 90 minutes per player with a 30 second increment from move one. Standings are decided on points, then Buchholz Cut1, Buchholz, Sonneborn Berger, direct encounter, the greater number of wins including forfeits, and the number of wins with black.
How entries are judged
Games are won, drawn or lost under the FIDE Laws of Chess. Final standings rank players by total points, broken in order by Buchholz Cut1, Buchholz, Sonneborn Berger, direct encounter, the greater number of wins with forfeits counted, and the number of wins with the black pieces.
Selection process
Placings are decided by points scored across the nine rounds, with the published tie-break order applied in sequence. Twelve players in the section take cash prizes and the section winner takes the National Schools Champion title for the age group.
How to apply
- 1Register the player with AICF for the tournament year, since no entry is accepted without it
- 2Ask the AICF affiliated state chess association to submit the entry, as direct entries are refused
- 3Pay the entry fee online at the AICF entry portal before the date named in the edition circular
- 4Carry the original birth certificate, a passport photograph, the school bona fide certificate and the payment proof to the venue
Fees & financial support
Fee details
Paid online at the AICF entry portal by debit card, credit card or net banking, with UPI and QR payments discouraged by AICF. Players from the North Eastern states and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands pay half. A late fee applies after the date named in each edition circular, after which entries close entirely. The fee is not refunded once the first round pairing is published, and it does not cover travel or accommodation, which families arrange themselves.
