About
The All India Chess Federation is the national governing body for the sport of chess in India. Founded informally in 1951 and officially registered as a society in 1958, AICF coordinates competitive chess across the country through its network of state associations and affiliated units. AICF is recognized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and the Asian Chess Federation. It conducts national age-category championships, the open National Championship, the Junior and Sub-Junior events, the National Schools Chess Championship, and the National Team Championships, in addition to selecting and supporting the Indian contingent at international events. The federation hosted the 44th Chess Olympiad in Chennai in 2022, the first time the Olympiad was held in India. Tournaments operate under FIDE Laws of Chess using the Swiss pairing system, with results contributing to FIDE rating progression and to selection for international representation. AICF works with State Chess Associations as its affiliated units, who nominate players and conduct state-level qualifiers. A new administration led by President Nitin Narang took office in March 2024.
