About This Opportunity
The Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz (BPMMQ) is a national-level materials science quiz for school students, organized annually since 1990 by the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM), Kalpakkam Chapter at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. Named after Prof. Brahm Prakash — a Padma Shri awardee, pioneer of India's space metallurgy, and first Director of ISRO's Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre — the quiz promotes awareness of metallurgy and materials science among students of Classes XI and XII.
Teams of two students represent IIM chapters from across India, competing through chapter-level selections, preliminary rounds, semifinals, and a Grand Finale featuring 10+ rounds of audio-visual questions, crossword puzzles, and innovative formats. Questions test curiosity, passion, and awareness rather than rote recall, covering topics from extractive metallurgy to advanced materials like ceramics, polymers, and semiconductors.
Beyond the quiz, participants enjoy guided tours of nuclear facilities at IGCAR (including MAPS, FBTR, and PFBR), attend the prestigious Brahm Prakash Memorial Lecture by eminent scientists, and can compete in the Essay cum Elocution Contest. Winners receive the Rs 25,000 O.P. Jindal Award and international prizes from The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS). Free accommodation, meals, and Chennai airport/railway station transfers are provided to all participants.
