Rewards and recognition
Award
₹30,000 in 2026
2026 quiz prizes: ₹30,000 for the winning team and ₹20,000 for the runner-up team. The two teams were to receive ₹15,000 and ₹10,000 at the closing function at Kalpakkam, and the rest at the IIM Awards Ceremony during the IIM Annual Technical Meeting. 2026 elocution prizes: ₹10,000 for the winner and ₹5,000 for each of two runners up.

The winning and runner-up teams get awards with prize money, given partly at Kalpakkam and partly at the IIM Awards Ceremony. All finalists get gifts. The elocution winner and two runners up get cash prizes.

About this opportunity
The Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz (BPMMQ) is a nationwide quiz on materials for school students in Grades 11 and 12. The Kalpakkam Chapter of the Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) runs it at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu. The chapter held its first materials quiz in 1990 and named it after the metallurgist Prof. Brahm Prakash in 1993. Over 120 students take part each year.
Students enter in teams of two, only through a chapter of the IIM. Each chapter may send up to three teams and one escort. Every team gets boarding, lodging and local transport at Kalpakkam, and the Kalpakkam chapter arranges pick-up and drop at Chennai railway station or airport.
All rounds are spoken questions, not written. Teams are split into groups by lot for the preliminary rounds, and the best teams in each group go to the semi-final. The final is a mystery round run by a professional quiz master. Questions are rarely direct and aim to test curiosity, passion and awareness about materials. The organizer calls this format indicative.
At the Metal Camp, students visit facilities such as the Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR). Quiz participants may also enter an essay and elocution contest. The winning and runner-up teams get prize money, and all finalists get gifts.

Topics the organizer lists as indicative: types of materials (metals and alloys, insulators, semiconductors, polymers, ceramics and composites, synthetic materials and biomaterials); their physical, mechanical, atomistic, electrical, nuclear and chemical properties; phenomena of materials; people who contributed to materials and related sciences; the evolution of materials and their link with civilization and culture; and current trends in materials.
