The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) is a professional body for metallurgists in India. Its head office is Metal House in Salt Lake, Kolkata, and it works through chapters across the country. It organizes technical conferences, conducts research, publishes education materials and conducts qualifying examinations, the AMIIM. It publishes the Transactions of The Indian Institute of Metals and IIM Metal News. For students and young scientists, it runs IIM-PRIME, summer research internships for undergraduates; IIM MATRIx, a startup hackathon for UG, PG and PhD students in metallurgy, materials and manufacturing; and SJEF grants that help young scientists attend international conferences. Its Kalpakkam chapter held its first materials quiz for school students in 1990, and the quiz was named the Prof. Brahm Prakash Memorial Materials Quiz in 1993.
