About this opportunity

The RoboCup Junior India CoSpace Challenge Under-19 is a national robot programming contest for teams aged 13 to 19. Teams program a virtual self-driving robot to find its way through a simulated smart city.

The Indian RoboCup Junior Foundation (RCJ India) runs it under the RoboCup Asia-Pacific CoSpace Autonomous Driving rules. Teams of 2 to 4 students code the robot in the CoSpace graphical interface, Python or C. The robot must follow guide lines, pass every waypoint, avoid obstacles and cross the finish line in a run of up to 4 minutes. In the Indian event, teams compete only in the virtual world, with no physical robot.

The Under-19 section has its own final and its own ranking. Teams that pass every waypoint and finish are ranked by time, and the rest by waypoints passed, then time. Trophies and certificates go to the top teams. RCJ India announces each season's events, venues and dates on its website.

Rounds & format

The competition typically involves regional qualifiers, followed by a national championship. The tournament format includes round-robin matches, a technical challenge to test coding skills, and knockout stages.

How entries are judged

Teams whose robot passes all waypoints and reaches the finish line are ranked by their game time at the finish. Teams whose robot misses a waypoint are ranked by the number of waypoints passed, then by the time taken to reach the last waypoint passed.

Selection process

Teams enter by registering for an RCJ India event. In the Under-19 final, teams whose robot passes every waypoint and reaches the finish line rank above all others, in order of finishing time. The rest are ranked by the number of waypoints passed, then by time. Trophies and certificates go to the top teams, with the number of awards set by how many teams enter.

Frequently asked questions

Who can play in the Under-19 section?

Teams of 2 to 4 students where members are 19 or younger on 1 July of the competition year and at least one member is 13 or older. A team whose members are all 12 or younger plays in the section for younger teams instead, and a team that mixes younger and older members plays here.

Do teams need to build a robot?

No. In the Indian event the section competes only in the virtual world, coding a simulated robot in the CoSpace GUI, Python or C.

How are teams ranked?

Teams whose robot passes every waypoint and finishes are ranked by finishing time. The rest are ranked by waypoints passed, then by time.

What happens if two teams share code?

Copying another team's program disqualifies both teams. The rules also keep mentors out of the student work area and bar them from coding, so the program must be the students' own work.
