Academic requirement
Bona fide regular student of a recognised school, studying in Grade 6 to Grade 12. A student who has passed Grade 12 cannot take part.

- Regular student in Grade 6 to Grade 12
- Selected and entered by the SGFI affiliated unit
- Age proof: Aadhaar or a birth certificate issued at least five years earlier
Open to regular school students in Grade 6 or above who are below 17 years of age counted from 31 December of the competition year; for the 2026-27 session that means born on or after 1 January 2010. Boys and girls compete in separate sections. The squad is picked and entered by the SGFI affiliated unit of the state or union territory, and a player may enter swimming through only one age group in a year.

Medals in each swimming and diving event
The top three in each U-17 swimming, relay and diving event receive gold, silver and bronze medals, with boys and girls medalled separately.

SGFI merit or participation certificate
SGFI issues merit and participation certificates against the official entry form signed by the unit. An event with fewer than eight entries does not award merit certificates.

Fee details
SGFI charges a registration fee of Rs 300 per player, paid online by the state or union territory unit through the unit login on the SGFI site after the online entry. The organising committee provides accommodation, local transport and the technical arrangements. Meals at the common mess are charged per head per day at the rate in the championship circular, and travel to the venue and insurance for the delegation are the unit's responsibility.

The SGFI National School Games Swimming and Diving Championship U-17 is the national school championship for swimmers and divers below 17 years of age, run by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI). It is for students in Grade 6 or above, with separate boys and girls sections.
Families do not enter directly. The SGFI affiliated unit of each state or union territory picks its squad through school, district and state meets and files the online entry. Each unit sends one team in the age group, of up to 42 boy swimmers, 40 girl swimmers and 6 divers each for boys and girls, and a player may enter swimming through only one age group in a year.
Boys race 18 swimming events and girls 17: 50, 100, 200 and 400 m freestyle; 50, 100 and 200 m backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly; the 200 m individual medley; and the 4x100 m freestyle and medley relays, plus the 400 m individual medley for both and the 800 m freestyle for boys. The 1500 m freestyle is not held in this age group. Diving has springboard, 1 m, 3 m and high board events for boys and girls.
Age and eligibility papers are checked when the teams report, the day before the championship starts. SGFI charges a registration fee of Rs 300 per player, paid online by the unit. The organising committee provides accommodation, local transport and the technical arrangements, while travel to the venue and insurance for the delegation are the unit's responsibility. SGFI allots each championship to a host state in its national calendar.
Rounds & format
Teams report the day before, when age and eligibility papers are checked and a coaches' meeting sets the programme and the rules. The events then run from morning to evening over the championship days, with the finals and the closing ceremony on the last day. Timing, scoring and results run on an electronic system at the venue.
How entries are judged
Swimming races are decided on time, recorded by the electronic timing system at the venue. Diving is scored by a panel of judges under the international federation's rules, which combine the judges' marks with each dive's degree of difficulty. Medals go to the top three in each event.

The SGFI affiliated unit of each state or union territory picks its U-17 squad through school, district and state meets and enters it online. Each unit sends one team in the age group. At the championship, medals in each event go by time in swimming and by the judges' scores in diving, separately for boys and girls.
