About This Opportunity
The Sky Observation Programme is conducted by the National Science Centre Mumbai, providing participants aged 12 and above with an immersive overnight astronomy experience on the centre grounds. Sessions are held on the terrace and open areas of the centre, where participants use telescopes to observe celestial objects including planets, stars, constellations, and nebulae visible from Mumbai.
Each session begins with an orientation on basic astronomy, star chart reading, and sky navigation, followed by guided observation periods that continue through the night. Experts from the centre lead discussions on current astronomical events, constellation identification, the movement of celestial bodies, and the science behind what participants observe in real time. The programme runs across multiple scheduled dates throughout the year, with sessions typically starting in the evening and running until the early morning hours.
No prior astronomy knowledge is required, making the programme accessible to curious students, families, and adult enthusiasts. A nominal registration fee of Rs 100 per person is charged to cover operational costs. Advance booking is strongly recommended as sessions fill quickly. Participants are advised to bring warm clothing and carry a small torch. The programme combines factual astronomical education with the wonder of direct celestial observation in a structured, expert-guided environment that is rare for urban participants.
