About
Gandharva Mahavidyalaya New Delhi is the oldest music school in Delhi, established in 1939 by Pandit Vinay Chandra Maudgalya, a disciple of Pandit Vinayakrao Patwardhan from the Gwalior Gharana. The institution traces its lineage to the original Gandharva Mahavidyalaya movement founded by Pandit Vishnu Digambar Paluskar in 1901. The school offers structured training in Hindustani classical music and Indian classical dance. Music subjects include vocal, sitar, flute, tabla, and harmonium, while dance offerings cover Kathak (Lucknow and Jaipur Gharanas) and Odissi. The institution follows the graded syllabi of the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal, Mumbai, and prepares students for nationally recognised certifications from Prarambhik through Madhyama Purna and beyond. The academy maintains over 1,200 students taught by a faculty of around 60 teachers. Under the leadership of Pandit Madhup Mudgal since 1995, the school continues its tradition of rigorous classical training and has produced generations of performers, scholars, and educators in the Hindustani tradition.
