About
The Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) Foundation is an autonomous body set up in 1982 by the Forests and Environment Department, Government of Gujarat. It works across two linked areas: ecological education for children, students and the general public, and scientific research on ecosystems, wildlife and habitats. The Foundation is registered as a society under the Indian Societies Registration Act, 1860 and as a public trust under the Bombay Public Trust Act, 1950, and is governed by a Board of Governors chaired by the Chief Minister. Its stated objectives include generating knowledge of ecology and natural history among children and youth, facilitating scientific research for conservation of natural resources, and establishing and managing wilderness areas, museums and parks. GEER serves as the state nodal agency for the National Green Corps programme, supporting Eco Clubs in schools through the Environment Education Programme and running capacity-building workshops for Eco Club teachers. It manages Indroda Nature Park, Aranya Udhyan and Hingolgadh Wildlife Sanctuary, and has conducted 4,168 experience-based nature education camps since 1982, reaching more than 231,000 students and over 10,000 teachers alongside its ecological research and publications.
