Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya
Mumbai, Maharashtra, India
About
Nalanda Nritya Kala Mahavidyalaya is a dedicated college of Indian classical dance, established in 1973 by Padma Bhushan Dr. Kanak Rele. It is affiliated to the University of Mumbai and awards Bachelor's, Master's and doctoral degrees in dance, making it one of the few institutions to bring classical dance into formal university education. The college operates as part of the Nalanda Dance Research Centre, a three-tier body spanning foundation-level classes for young learners, degree programmes, and a dedicated research division. The centre is recognised as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation by the Ministry of Science and Technology, a distinction unique among Indian dance institutions. Teaching blends the traditional guru-shishya parampara with structured academics across Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Mohiniattam, Odissi and folk forms. The institution has been granted autonomous status by the UGC and is accredited by NAAC.
