About
The National Institute of Advanced Studies (NIAS) is a multidisciplinary research institute located on the campus of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. NIAS was conceived and founded in 1988 by the late J.R.D. Tata to advance integrated research across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, and to bring this research into national policy and education conversations. Within its School of Social Sciences, NIAS anchors the National Programme on Identification and Mentoring of Gifted Children (popularly known as NIAS-EGT), a long-running initiative that focuses on identifying and supporting gifted and talented children from ages 0-18 across urban and rural India. The programme works through observation-based identification, mentoring, summer and winter workshops, residential workshops in rural and tribal contexts, and structured advanced learning centres. NIAS-EGT was initiated in 2011 with support from the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). The programme is led by NIAS faculty and supported by mentors drawn from academic and industry backgrounds across India.
