About
Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra is a renowned cultural institution that runs a school for music, dance, and performing arts in New Delhi. The institution offers training in Indian classical dance forms including Kathak, Bharatanatyam, Odissi, and Mayurbhanj Chhau, alongside Hindustani vocal and instrumental music. Founded in 1952 by Sumitra Charat Ram, the institution evolved from the 1947 society called Jhankar. It serves students from foundation through advanced and post-diploma levels through its College of Music and Dance. The Kendra is known for its annual Ramlila dance-drama production, started in 1957, and houses an art gallery and library with rare collections on Indian performing arts. Its original Kathak wing later became the National Institute of Kathak Dance under Sangeet Natak Akademi. Leadership at the institution has earned national recognition, including the Padma Shri awarded to founder Sumitra Charat Ram in 1966 and to current director Shobha Deepak Singh in 1999.
