Swechha India

Swechha is a youth-led environmental and social NGO that inspires, creates, and supports a just, equitable, and sustainable society. Founded in 2000, the organisation began by mobilising students against the pollution of the Yamuna river and has since grown into a multi-program platform working at the intersection of environment, education, and citizenship. Its work spans afforestation, solid waste management, water conservation, sustainable agriculture, and ecological design innovation. The organisation runs initiatives such as the Yamuna Yatra educational expedition, Green the Map afforestation campaign, Green Action in Schools, NatureScapes and CityScapes urban ecology programs, Remakery India circular-economy studio, and the Farm School sustainability learning centre. Swechha engages young people through experiential learning, volunteering camps, fellowships, and school-based curriculum interventions, with a stated aim of building resilience and long-term solutions to ecological degradation, health, and poverty. Over two decades, Swechha reports reaching more than 100,000 students, planting over a million trees, and engaging thousands of volunteers in environmental restoration work across India. Its founder and executive director, Vimlendu Jha, is an environmental activist and educator who has represented Indian youth-led ecological action on national and international platforms.
