Udayan Care

Udayan Care is an Indian non-profit organisation founded in 1994 by Dr Kiran Modi. It works on alternative care for orphaned and vulnerable children, family strengthening, education and empowerment of girls, and skilling and livelihood for disadvantaged youth. The organisation runs four flagship verticals: Udayan Ghars (long-term LGBTQ-inclusive group homes for children without parental care), the Udayan Shalini Fellowship for academically talented girls from low-income families, a Skilling and Livelihood Programme, and an Advocacy, Research and Training arm that informs policy on child rights and aftercare. Udayan Care follows the NAT model, identifying beneficiaries based on Need, Ambition and Talent. Through pyramid mentoring, structured workshops on life skills, career counselling, employability and personality development, the organisation supports first-generation learners from school through graduation and into the workforce. The Shalini Fellowship alone has supported more than 18,500 girls with a reported retention rate of 95 percent. Udayan Care is a registered NGO with FCRA approval, has chapters in Germany, Australia and the USA, and operates 38 fellowship chapters across 14 to 15 Indian states. Its approach has been recognised by national and international platforms working on alternative care, gender equity and education.
