About
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global authority on the environment within the United Nations System, established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to coordinate international responses to environmental challenges. UNEP's mandate is to provide leadership, deliver science and develop solutions across climate change, ecosystem management and green economic development, working with governments, civil society and youth networks to advance the Sustainable Development Goals. In India, UNEP partners with the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and state governments on environmental education and youth mobilization initiatives. UNEP runs the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge in India in partnership with the Centre for Environment Education and WWF-India, engaging youth through the National Green Corps Eco Club network since 2019. The programme sits within UNEP's global Clean Seas campaign against marine plastic pollution, and UNEP also convenes World Environment Day each year to mobilize public action on the environment.
