About This Opportunity

The Asia Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO) is an annual international competition aimed at identifying and challenging mathematically gifted high school students from Pacific-Rim countries. It promotes mathematical excellence, creative problem-solving, and international academic exchange. The contest consists of a single four-hour examination featuring five advanced problems, each carrying a maximum of 7 points, requiring deep conceptual understanding and proof-based reasoning.

In India, students cannot directly register for APMO. Participation is strictly by invitation through the Mathematical Olympiad Programme (MOP), which is conducted by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE) on behalf of the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.

The Indian selection follows a clearly defined multi-stage pathway, and it is recommended to treat each stage as a separate opportunity instance with its own dates and timelines:

IOQM (Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics) – First stage and entry point

RMO (Regional Mathematical Olympiad) – Second stage

INMO (Indian National Mathematical Olympiad) – Third stage

Only students who perform exceptionally well in INMO and are selected for the International Mathematical Olympiad Training Camp (IMOTC) become eligible to represent India in APMO.

All registrations, official notifications, syllabi, and stage-wise schedules are published only on the official HBCSE Mathematics Olympiad page, which should be referenced as the authoritative source for this opportunity.

APMO problems emphasize advanced mathematics, logical reasoning, and rigorous proof writing, offering students significant national and international recognition. Strong performance enhances prospects for advanced studies and careers in mathematics, science, engineering, and research, making APMO a highly prestigious milestone in the Olympiad pathway.
