About This Opportunity
The Asian Physics Olympiad (APhO) is a prestigious international competition for pre-university students across Asia and Oceania, challenging participants with advanced physics problems. It serves as a regional precursor to the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), fostering scientific excellence and global collaboration.
Indian students are selected exclusively through a rigorous four-stage process managed by the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE), involving the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP), Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO), and Pre-Departure Training camps (PDTs). This competition features five-hour theoretical and experimental examinations, with medals and honorable mentions awarded based on individual performance.
Eligibility
- Grade Level
- Class 9–12
- Age Range
- 14 - 19 years
- Location
- Nationwide
Academic requirement
Secondary-school student under 20 years of age on 30 June of the competition year, who has not yet enrolled as a regular student in any university or equivalent post-secondary institution.
Prerequisites
- Qualified through NSEP, INPhO and OCSC selection at HBCSE
- Strong foundation in school and pre-university physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics and modern physics
- Qualified through the HBCSE Olympiad pipeline: National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP), Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO), and Pre-Departure Training camps (PDTs).
- Strong foundation in school and pre-university physics, including classical mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics and modern physics.
Additional requirements
- Indian students cannot apply to APhO directly. Selection is through the HBCSE Olympiad pipeline.
- Stage 1: National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP), conducted by IAPT, usually in November.
- Stage 2: Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO), conducted by HBCSE for NSEP qualifiers, usually late January or early February.
- Stage 3: Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC) at HBCSE Mumbai in April–May; top performers are chosen for the Indian team to APhO and IPhO.
- Indian citizenship and residence; must be studying in an Indian school recognised by a recognised Board.
Open only to Indian school students who clear the rigorous HBCSE pipeline (NSEP → INPhO → OCSC). Must be under 20 years of age on June 30th of the competition year and not enrolled in any university or equivalent post-secondary institution.

Highlights
- Rigorous four-stage national selection process via HBCSE and IAPT.
- Two distinct examination components: theoretical and experimental, each lasting five hours.
- Serves as a direct pathway to represent India at the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO).
- Provides international exposure and networking opportunities with top physics students from across Asia.

Rounds & format
The competition consists of two main rounds held on separate contest days: a five-hour theoretical examination and a five-hour experimental examination. There is typically at least one day of rest between these two competition days. The theoretical paper usually comprises three complex problems, while the experimental paper involves one or two laboratory tasks.
How entries are judged
Medals (gold, silver, bronze) and honorable mentions are awarded based on individual ranking. The theoretical problems are collectively scored out of 30 points, and experimental tasks are scored out of 20 points, for an overall maximum of 50 points. Partial credit is awarded for correct intermediate steps, logical reasoning, and accurate derivations, with final scores moderated by the International Board.
Selection process
The Indian team to APhO is selected by HBCSE based on performance at the Pre-Departure Training camps (PDTs), which itself is reached via the National Standard Examination in Physics (NSEP) and the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO). Performance in both theoretical and experimental components throughout the pipeline is crucial.
How to apply
- 1No direct application for APhO.
- 2Indian students enter via the HBCSE selection process: NSEP → INPhO → OCSC. The Indian team to APhO (up to 8 students) is selected from top performers at the OCSC.
