About this opportunity
CMS VATAVARAN is one of Asia's largest competitive film festivals and forums dedicated to environmental and wildlife cinema. Founded in 2002 by the Centre for Media Studies, the festival showcases films from India and around the world that highlight conservation, climate change, biodiversity, and community-led environmental action.
The festival is open to filmmakers in Indian and International categories, with a dedicated Youth category for young filmmakers under 25 years, split into Under 16 and Under 25 sub-categories. School and college students can submit short environmental films of up to 30 minutes on any conservation or sustainability theme, from local school projects to global climate activism.
Submitted films pass through a three-tier jury process, and shortlisted entries are screened at the festival venue in New Delhi. Winning films receive trophies, certificates, public screenings, and visibility across festival partner networks, including the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, WWF India, IUCN CEC, and GIZ.
Rounds and format
Submissions go through a three-tier jury process: preliminary screening, nominations jury, and final awards jury. Shortlisted nominated films are screened at the festival in New Delhi before the awards ceremony.
How entries are judged
Films are evaluated on environmental relevance, storytelling, cinematography, research depth, originality, and overall impact on audiences regarding conservation and sustainability themes.
Selection process
Top films from each category are nominated after the three-tier jury review and announced as winners at the gala ceremony.

Frequently asked questions
How should young filmmakers choose a theme that stands out at CMS VATAVARAN?
Themes rooted in lived environmental experience tend to score well. Local biodiversity, school waste systems, community conservation, or a specific climate impact in the filmmaker's region give jurors something fresh compared to broad climate-change essays.
What does a strong Youth-category short film typically include?
Selected youth films usually combine a clear environmental message with authentic field footage, original interviews, and a tight 5-15 minute runtime. Production polish matters less than originality, research depth, and a real point of view.
How can parents support participation without taking over the project?
Parents can help with logistics, equipment access, and travel to shoot locations while leaving the storytelling and editing decisions to the student. Institutional endorsement and parental consent paperwork should be ready early.
What happens if a film is shortlisted but not awarded?
Shortlisted films are still screened at the festival in New Delhi and listed in the official nominations programme. This exposure connects student filmmakers to conservation organisations, broadcasters, and an international green film community.
Is festival travel and accommodation provided for selected youth filmmakers?
Travel and accommodation are typically not covered by the festival for the Youth category. Families and schools usually arrange logistics for filmmakers invited to the New Delhi screenings and gala ceremony.
