About this opportunity

Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune's Hindustani Classical Music Certificate Programme is a structured, examination based pathway for building proficiency in Indian classical vocal and instrumental music, progressing from the beginner Prarambhik level to the advanced Alankar level.

Open to students aged seven and above, with no prior musical knowledge required to begin at the Prarambhik level. Learners choose Hindustani vocal music or instruments including tabla, harmonium, flute, and synthesizer, and progress through nine graded levels, Prarambhik, Praveshika, Madhyama, Visharad, and Alankar, each split into Pratham and Poorna stages.

Each level combines practical performance training in ragas and taals with music theory and notation, assessed through a dedicated examination held offline at centres across Maharashtra or online by video conferencing from anywhere. The certification is recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Government of Maharashtra, and the Visharad level is considered equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Indian classical music.

The programme is administered by Bharatiya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal, the trust registered in 1942 that has governed Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Pune since, continuing a tradition of classical music education founded in 1932 by Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan.
