About This Opportunity

The Kalakshetra Part-Time Carnatic Music Course, known as the Pratama course, is a six-year children's programme in Carnatic music offered through the Rukmini Devi College of Fine Arts at Kalakshetra Foundation, Chennai.

Learners choose either the vocal stream or an instrumental stream in veena, violin or mridangam, and study at the Kalakshetra campus at Thiruvanmiyur. Classes are held in person in the evenings on selected weekdays.

The programme builds a structured foundation in Carnatic music over six graded years, taking children from basic exercises to a deeper practical command of the tradition. Admission is based on an interaction that assesses a child's orientation towards music rather than prior training.

Kalakshetra Foundation is an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture and an Institution of National Importance, giving the Pratama course a strong grounding in one of India's most respected centres for the classical arts.
