About this opportunity

The MaRRS International Spelling Bee is one of Asia's largest school-level English competitions, conducted since 2003 by MaRRS Intellectual Services Pvt. Ltd. The competition is open to school students from Class 1 to Class 10 and is organised in grade-level categories so that students compete only against peers of the same standard. Close to a million students participate each year across India and partner countries.

The contest moves through a progression of stages — school level, first national online assessment, state level, national level and finally the international level. Eleven rounds across these stages cover the breadth of English language usage. Written rounds include dictation, jumbled letters, word application, crossword, idioms and phrasal verbs. Oral rounds include Spell It, where students continue spelling words until they make a mistake, alongside pronunciation, antonyms and synonyms. Additional rounds introduced over the years assess word origin (etymology) and supra-segmentals such as stress, syllables and IPA pronunciation.

MaRRS frames the Spelling Bee as a motivational learning programme rather than a one-day test. Participants receive structured base learning material and access to online rounds free of cost, and progression through the rounds is intended to build sustained reading, vocabulary and pronunciation habits across an academic year. Winners at higher stages have historically received scholarships and cash awards, with top performers progressing to the international final.

How entries are judged
