About this opportunity

The Open School run by Sankalp Trust serves children with specific learning disabilities through a remedial pathway leading to National Institute of Open Schooling certification. The Open School operates the motto Learning Imaginatively, teaching academics and life skills based on each child's individual achievement levels.

Children are first taught the basics of reading, comprehension, basic mathematics and writing before moving to academic subjects including English, Science and Social Studies. Academic instruction is delivered through a therapy approach in a structured learning environment with differentiated teaching strategies focused on each child's strengths.

Students are trained to write the NIOS Secondary Class X examination over two years and may continue to NIOS Senior Secondary Class XII over a further two years. Optional NIOS subjects include Business Studies, Home Science, Data Entry and Painting at Class X, and Mass Communication, Home Science, Commerce and Data Entry at Class XII. After Class X some students continue with NIOS while others transition back to mainstream Class XII.

The programme features small class strength enabling active learning, an approximate 1:3 teacher-to-student ratio, individualised education plans, integrated occupational therapy, brain gym and physical education, and co-curricular activities including cookery, dance, drums, silambam, theatre, yoga and pottery. The programme is housed in well-ventilated classrooms in Shenoy Nagar with school hours from 9 to 3:10 PM. Students 16 and above can join the PRAYAAS vocational programme leading into the BEYOND PRAYAAS placement and stipend track.
